Sometimes I wonder if the Australian racist attacks, is it really such a serious matter.
Racist attacks against Indians and more so Indian students has always been there not only is australia but also in the US , UK and france . But Indian students don’t really complain because they are more or less helpless. Most of the ‘Honest’ Indians have huge loans and a deep desire to have a better lifestyle in such developed nations , so they bear such incidents and don’t report such matters most of the time.
Well, coming back to the Australia , 'Middle Australia' has responded to the charge of racism with visible irritation. Writing in the Herald Sun , a columnist couldn't conceal his disbelief that "India which perfected the caste system and is plagued by Hindu-Muslim blood fests, is telling us that we are too prejudiced". He may be right to some extend. Many Indians had given Sonia Gandhi a hard time way back in 1996 saying that she is Ifrom italy and won’t bring about any changes in India , but today her actions have proved her valuable role in our journey towards economic and social development .
Bihari attacked by MNS workers
Anyways why look at other nations discriminating against Indians racially. In India itself phenomenon isn't unique. The wariness felt by some Marathi manoos at the growing number of Chhat pujas in Mumbai correspond to the bewilderment of old Birmingham residents at the transformation of some parts of the city into Pakistani ghettos. In Mumbai, the emotionally beleaguered turn to the Shiv Sena or its more excitable cousin, MNS; likewise the British National Party appeals to those who feel strangers in their own country. Both responses are, arguably, "racist" but since similar responses cut across national and ethnic lines there is also a universalism to desperate responses born out of an inability to cope with change. In this gobalised world this is just the beginning of massive demographic change the world is going to face. Hopefully everyone of us should be prepared to accept a world without border and treat everyone with equal respect and dignity be it Indians in Australia or Biharis in Mumbai …….
